SOLBIATE OLONA (VA) 5 JULY 2011. In today’s geo-strategic environment the NATO Alliance’s emphasis has moved away from the large-in-place formations of the Cold War and has instead focused on smaller, more flexible forces able to support NATO’s crisis management strategy. Whilst force size has reduced, the move away from the old linear battlefield and the conditions of expeditionary warfare have increased the demands of supplying the force
With this concept in mind NRDC-ITA’s Combat Service Support Division, G4 Branch held a logistic seminar on 4-5 July 2011 at Ugo Mara Barracks, Solbiate Olona, that delivered up-to date information regarding past and current NATO Logistic Doctrine and Procedures, recent developments related to Logistic Functional Area Services (LOGFAS) and a preview of the NRDC-ITA Staff deployment to ISAF in 2013.
After the welcome address from Assistant Chief of Staff G4 Colonel ESP (A) Juan Antonio de Ramon y Casado, the 30 strong audience, made of NRDC-ITA personnel and external guests, received presentations on the lessons learned from the military operations of the Russian Army Logistics in Afghanistan and the Italian Army Logistics in Somalia. After these historical studies the seminar focused on the current logistic capabilities of the 2nd Greek Division and the Portuguese and Hungarian Brigades that are all affiliated to NRDC – ITA.
Amongst others, the seminar was attended by Colonel ITA (A) Antonio Gelao, Head of the logistic academic directorate at the Italian Army Officers’ School and represented a perfect opportunity to put into practice the memorandum of understanding between NRDC–ITA, the Italian Army Officers’ School and the Post Conflict Operations Centre, signed on 1st June 2011, to share NRDC-ITA expertise in NATO doctrine and NATO-led military operations with those military institutes in Turin.
The Seminar ended with a presentation from the LOGFAS Cell about the new functions embedded in this key logistical software system. These functions allow LOGFAS users to have a common clear picture on the overall logistic situation during the operations. Furthermore, the system is able to help logisticians during the operation/exercises planning phase.
At the end of the seminar, the Colonel de Ramon y Casado, thanked the participants and re-emphasised NRDC-ITA’s commitment to continual improvement and professional development.
